Get Out and Play!

As the weather warms and the earth turns green again, it is time to head to Grant County for outdoor adventure! If you love to fish, hike, bike, or paddle, we have epic spots here amongst the stunning outdoor beauty of the Potomac Highlands.

The North Fork Mountain Trail, which is approximately 24-miles long, is ideal for a 2 to 3-day backpacking trip that is full of wildlife and amazing scenery. One of the most popular destinations on North Fork Mountain Trail is Chimney Rock. This hidden gem in the Monongahela National Forest provides one of the best views in the state. Serious mountain bikers also know the North Fork Mountain Trail as one of Appalachia’s best rides.

The beautiful and unique Smoke Hole Canyon Recreation Area is a mecca for hikers, bikers, climbers, fishermen, paddlers, tubers, hunters, and campers. Tucked away in 40 square miles of the Monongahela National Forest Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, discover a rugged, remarkable 20-mile-long gorge carved by the South Branch Potomac River and framed by the North Fork Mountain to the west and Cave Mountain to the east.

Smoke Hole Canyon has over 300 established climbs, from beginner-friendly to high-end sport climbs. The area has modern hardware and is well bolted. Smoke Hole can be difficult to navigate in places. It’s spread out over a large area, making it an adventure lover’s crag.

The distinctive upper course of the South Branch of the Potomac River navigates through Smoke Hole. The river twists and turns as it traverses through this deep and narrow valley making it a popular destination for fishing, swimming, floating, kayaking, and canoeing. Tubers love the “Big Bend” section of the river. You can put in on one side of the road, ride the big bend of the river and take out on the other side of the road.

If you are interested in a guided fishing experience, our experienced local guides can create a memorable experience for you. Josh (Trout King) & Rachelle Hedrick, owners/outfitters/guides of Smoke Hole Outfitters in the heart of Smoke Hole Resort, have been providing fishing adventures to guests for over a decade.

Whether you’re an experienced angler or novice, the fly fishing guides at Harman’s Luxury Cabins offer invaluable lessons and greatly enhance your fly fishing excursion. Harman’s offers full and ½ day guide services along Harman’s 2 miles of private access trophy trout stream providing anglers the opportunity to fish for beautiful trophy trout.

Come out and play. Our mountains and streams are calling!
