Spring is the best time to wet a line.

As the cold of winter disappears and the excitement of spring arrives, fishing enthusiasts find their way to Grant County for some of the best fishing in West Virginia. Our cool mountain streams and stunning lakes make for an anglers paradise.

The North Fork South Branch of the Potomac River boasts smallmouth bass, fallfish, sunfish, channel catfish, rock bass, brown trout, rainbow trout, golden trout, and occasional tiger trout. There is easy access for wading and deeper channels for kayak and canoes. The Smoke Hole section of the South Branch of the Potomac is popular for smallmouth bass, fallfish, sunfish, brown trout, rainbow trout, and golden trout. Both of these sections of river are stocked once in January, twice in February, and weekly March through May.

The South Branch of the Potomac at Welton Park and in the city of Petersburg offers excellent chances to catch smallmouth bass, fallfish, sunfish, channel catfish, rock bass, and occasional brown trout, rainbow trout, or golden trout. Both spots offer convenient public access.

If you prefer lake fishing, Mt. Storm Lake is a 1,200-acre lake, accessible from WV 93. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, blue gill, hybrid striped bass and walleye are abundant. The lake offers a public boat ramp near the dam. South Mill Creek Lake is

A 48-acre lake south of Dorcas WV, and is accessible from WV Rt. 9. The lake offers excellent fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie and blue-gill. The lake also receives bi-weekly trout stockings from March through May.
