Book a winter getaway!

As you begin to think about a winter getaway, Petersburg is the ideal hub to experience all the amazing winter activities in the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. Located within a short drive of all the major ski resorts, Petersburg is the most convenient destination to visit them all and experience the incredible winter hiking opportunities here in Grant County.

In less than an hour, you can be on the slopes at Canaan Valley Resort. At a summit elevation of 4,280 feet, Canaan Valley offers 40 trails for every level of skier or snowboarder. Less than five miles from Canaan Valley Resort, White Grass is a cross country ski touring center that offers acres of trails, ski rentals, and classes.

Also located in the Canaan Valley is Timberline Mountain. Many ski aficionados argue that Timberline, which features a 1,000 feet of vertical drop and a variety of terrains, offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the Mid-Atlantic.

If sledding is more your speed, Blackwater Falls State Park has one of the longest sledding hills around and is the perfect winter activity for families.

Just 90 minutes from Petersburg is Snowshoe Mountain Resort with 251 acres of skiable terrain and 11,000 acres of pristine backcountry.

On your off days from skiing, take a trek to the state’s highest point at Spruce Knob with unique and stunning views in the stark winter months. Dolly Sods is in West Virginia’s high country, so be extra careful about trail junctions and stream crossings in the winter, but the beauty of snow-covered meadows makes it worth it.
