Fort Mulligan, an earthen Civil War fort built in 1863, survives on the outskirts of Petersburg on high ground commanding the local road network and the South Branch of the Potomac River. Some of the defensive works, remains of winter camp cabins and bomb-proofs are still visible. The fort was constructed from August through December of 1863, by Union troops under the command of Col. James A. Mulligan, from Chicago, Illinois. Fort Mulligan is a must see for history lovers.

Don’t miss the Old Courthouse. In 1928, the World War I monument was added out front with the concrete work done by John Edsmond Taylor. Built before 1840, the Davis House Museum originally served as the parsonage for the Methodist Church and its traveling pastors. Located behind the Old Courthouse, the Tannery House serves as a museum relating to the Petersburg Tannery that employed many locals for years.
