Did you know that Petersburg is home to one of the state’s largest walnut syrup producers? You heard that right: WALNUT syrup. And after surviving the horrific fires of 2024, Mongold Walnut Farm is standing tall. With around 1,400 walnut trees—12 acres’ worth—Mongold produces a walnut syrup that is highly prized. If you’ve never tasted walnut syrup, you are in for more than just a sweet treat. The syrup, surprisingly, doesn’t have the bitterness or bite that people typically associate with black walnuts. Walnut syrup is rich and complex with a nutty undertone and a hint of butterscotch, and it is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It also is a bit more pricey. Given the supply, walnut syrup can sell for $400 to $500 a gallon.
When Gary Mongold entered his walnut syrup in the 2022 West Virginia Maple Syrup Producers Association’s Annual Maple Syrup Competition, he took first place. “I’ve had many maple producers who’ve told me that they’ve never tasted anything like our walnut syrup, but maple folks can be diehards. It’s kind of like Ford or Chevy folks. There’s some who’d rather walk than drive a Chevy—but some think walnut syrup is better than maple.”
Visit Mongold’s sugar shack, located near Petersburg’s Spring Run Trout Hatchery, to taste it for yourself and learn more about walnut syrup and how it differs from maple. 235 Getz Mountain Road, Petersburg
