Places to Play

Spring and summer in Grant County is time to play and we have some of the best public parks in the state. There is no reason to waste your days indoors with nine local parks all conveniently located with everything you need to have fun in the sun. We keep our kids busy and active all year long taking advantage of these amazing facilities.

Weekends and evenings are filled with the sound of bats cracking, balls bouncing, and parents clapping at Michael Field, as it hosts sports tournaments attracting teams from all around the area. This 23-acre, multi-use sports facility includes a walking trail, softball, baseball, soccer fields, and batting cages. Enjoying a game on a warm evening brings you back in time to simpler days.

Despite being one of our newest parks, Welton Park gets the most visitors each year. The park is absolutely stunning sitting in the scenic Petersburg Gap on the banks of the South Branch of the Potomac. We have a playground for the little ones, walking trails, and a boat ramp with easy parking for your kayak float trips. The 29-acre park includes basketball courts, baseball field, and pavilions perfect for a summer picnic.

Dad’s favorite park is probably Turner Park, located in Maysville. The 10-acre facility is devoted largely to shooting sports and is the home to the annual West Virginia Muzzleloader Shoot. We love to bring family and friends to shoot in a safe environment and best of all, it is free of charge.

Dam Site 7 Park is located at Grant County’s extreme southern boundary next to Pendleton County. When the family is ready for a day of fishing, this is where we head. With 55-acres of open water, there are plenty of great spots to wet your line. The kids like to fish off the pier and explore the mile-long hiking trail along the lake.

A wonderful place to hold a family reunion is Echo Park. Formerly 4-H Camp Echo, it is actually two parks. Atop the hill is a playground and picnic facility, down below, along the banks of the river, is a collection of rustic, yet modern, cabins, dining hall and restrooms. Book it early, because it fills up quickly.
